Return of the internets!
Apr. 22nd, 2008 07:38 pmI can go online at silly times again!
Alright then, friendslist, talk to me about adverts.
I'm not entirely sure why this interests me; I've always found myself a tad unnerved by the effect publicity can have on me. I mean, I've never really been inspired by an advert alone to rush out and buy something, but there've been posters or TV/radio ads that've wormed their way into my consciousness and remained lodged there for ages.
Does this happen to you? Describe for me adverts that you love, hate, remember from about ten years ago. Youtube links are great, but even better when accompanied by a brief description. (Don't ask me why. They just are.) And tell me why! I'd like to know.
The first advert I remember having a big effect on me was actually part of an electoral campaign. (I think it was the 1997 election, but now that I've said that it'll probably turn out that there was no election in 1997. Anyway, I was pretty young.) The Conservative party put up anti-Labour posters everywhere - Labour had been campaigning under a slogan about "New Labour", and so the Tories ran a campaign against it with stuff like "New Labour, New Danger". I can't really remember exactly what they looked like - I think one was a picture of a lion that'd been torn in half, with a red tear running down its face. Miss Adam informs me that upside-down eyes were involved. There was one with the slogan "New Labour, No Britain" which was just a blank Union Jack. They terrified me. There was one of the lion ones outside our local shopping mall's car park - I used to duck down when we drove past it. (Hey, I was only seven, I didn't understand the politics.)
Other ones...adverts probably freak me out more than they should ^^; There used to be one for Schnapps which parodied a nursery rhyme. "Beware the Judderman, my dear, when the moon is fat..." The Judderman was just a really skinny animated figure; he gave the actor in the advert a bottle of Schnapps which turned him into a puppet, and then danced him around a bit. I was about ten or eleven, I think. I couldn't understand why anyone would buy a drink that did that to you.
What else? The Think! adverts! They're still about, aren't they? I can't stand them. When the remote control for my radio still worked and I still actually listened to the radio, I fell asleep next to it one night and ended up turning it on just as one of the "are you sleeping in your car? THEN YOU WILL DIE, YOU FOOL" ones came on. I just lay there for a while thinking "...but...I don't even drive..." They're the bane of going to the cinema, those adverts. *shudder* Loosely connected to those are the ones designed to frighten you into testing your smoke alarm and putting out cigarettes before you go to sleep. And the anti-smoking ones which are just a lot of heavy breathing. And the anti-drinking ones which caution you against jumping off buildings whilst smashed...
The Cadbury's adverts for now just confuse me. The drumming gorilla one was rather sweet, although I don't see how it relates to chocolate. Zoe hates the new one with the aeroplanes; I find it funny, and I don't know why. And they've brought back the old one for Maynard's wine gums, which fucks with my head. It annoys me, but in a sort of affectionate way.
The Berocca one also confuses me, and I don't know why.
The tagline is "You - but on a really good day". The advert involves people dancing on treadmills. I don't see how that's me n a really good day. I mean, dancing on a treadmill would probably be a lot of fun, but it's not what I associate with a really good day. I wouldn't come home and go "oh, I had the best day today! I finally got to dance on a treadmill!"
...Or maybe I would. Anyway. I enjoy the music for that ad, to be fair. (My dad pointed out to me this morning that the dancing on treadmills thing is probably a metaphor for enjoying yourself at work. It seems plausible enough. BUT I'M STILL CONFUSED.
So! This post in summary: UK residents, tell me which adverts you like! Residents of Not The UK...tell me what the advertising over there's like, and which ones you particularly love or hate!
Just for the record, I have absolutely no idea what brought this on.
Thank you.

Date: 2008-04-22 07:23 pm (UTC)The adverts that really stay with me past the annoying jingle stage are ones from really early on in my childhood - three in particular stand out. The first was any advert for Vienetta. For some reason, whether it was the way the knife cut through the topping or how the ice cream rippled, they somehow scared me so much that I actually held my breath until the advert had finished. I've never even eaten the bloody things...
Then there was an advert for chewing gum which was on a video of The BFG my dad had recorded from Channel 4, so every time I watched that film (which must have been at least twenty), I'd see that advert with this beautiful girl and a gorgeous man, who meet on a bus, share a piece of gum by tearing it in half and, when they meet up again, place the torn wrappers together. I'm pretty sure that the music was a song by Free called All RIght Now, but I've failed so far to find it on YouTube.
There was also this insane advert for some sort of credit card, possibly on the same video as the chewing gum ad, which had things like a man paying for a lobster in a posh restaurant and the lobster singing at him. Sounds weird, I know, but I really liked it. :D The Um Bongo ad gets an honourable mention just for being the first advert I sang along with.
I think my ultimate favourite advert's the Levi's jeans freedom to move one. It's just two people smashing through wall after wall and ending up launching themselves into space, but what I really love is the moment when they look at each other and there's that moment of connection. It's like love at first sight. With rubble.
Blimey, long comment - sorry!

Date: 2008-04-22 07:36 pm (UTC)That used to freak me out so much. In other notes, the Wine Gums one is absolutely fab, and I'm really glad they put that back on TV to freak out the kiddlywinks.
Speaking of freaking out the kiddlywinks, I remember there was this one, I believe it was for Lucozade (correct me if I'm wrong) in which there was this old granny who drank some Lucozade and, er, turned into the creepy punkraverdude from Prodigy? I don't know whether this is a real advert or just a crackfic waiting to happen.
Also, I used to love this one for a chocolate bar called Siesta, where there was this launderette and people started singing in the launderette. I'll find 'em on YouTube someday.

...I'm sorry, I'm finding it a bit hard to stop.

Date: 2008-04-22 10:05 pm (UTC)Victory Auto Wreckers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH95UTtbmr8) started using the ad before I was born, and still uses it now (although altered a little). The guy selling his old car in the clip worked for them at the time, and there have been a few newspaper articles interviewing him recently-- he says people would recognize him and buy him drinks, all of that.
Eagle Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4-e4nlfdRI&NR=1) never fails to make me laugh. Man in eagle suit plus car insurance somehow equals hilarious.
I'm not sure what else to add. Advertising is always a huge national deal during the Super Bowl broadcast. Every company tries to come up with the cleverest or most memorable, with mixed results, and it's pretty common for people to rank their favorites the day afterward. Oh! I'm a fan of the "Get a Mac" commercials, not least of all because John Hodgman plays the PC.

Beautiful.
I also really love all the Orange 'please turn your mobile phone off before the film' cinema trailers, because they're just hilarious.
And I liked this Kleenex advert very much. My heartstrings are easily tugged.

Date: 2008-04-23 10:11 am (UTC)I like the Crusha (or whatever its called) adverts, 'cause they're made by the guy that does rathergood.com and...I LIKE THE MOON.
The new renault clio adverts have become a pet hate of mine and Danielle's, purely 'cause what we get from it is 'right....so they show off their flashy cars because they're ashamed of the clio? Great advertising, really.'
My fav adverts are the ones for products I like, I have to say. Coke adverts (not that I'm in love with coke, I just like the old original companies, y'know?) ESPECIALLY AT CHRISTMAS! Cadbury's...but...my favourite ever...
HONDA! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB_1gPRCLCo Enjoy.
I ALWAYS used to want the toys on adverts when I was younger. Always always always. I never got them. I hope that's made me a better person xD
Also...I like adverts that make you think of the cinema 'cause that's where you used to see them...like...THE OLD DR PEPPER ONES! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Hate adverts for: washing/cleaning products, compensation, lawyers, further education, education courses, insurance of ANY kind, websites like CONFUSED.FUCKINGCOM, stupid kids toys that make your 4 year old sister go 'I WANT IT' and make you want to die (Lelly kelly I will use those shoes to smack you silly and dig your grave), BOOKS (why? If they're good, people will buy them, do not advertise BOOKS GOD DAMN YOU!), supermarkets, clothes, banks, electronics (Except the xbox one...amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYducok2od0), deoderants, razors, hair dye, shampoo, all that stuff...
Basically, anything that isn't a games console, a decent mobile phone, a beer, or a car advert. Get off moi screen.

Date: 2008-04-23 07:41 pm (UTC)...or...maybe that's just me. That advert was SO ANNOYING ><
Do some of your channels just not have advertising? We've got the BBC, who...well, they do advertise, but only between programmes, and those are confined to plugging their own stuff; they don't have advert breaks during shows. D'you have anything like that over there?

Date: 2008-04-23 09:21 pm (UTC)Ooh, speaking of annoying ads, pray that Head-On (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Is3icfcbmbs) is never marketed in the UK. It's the most irritating thing I've never seen.
