Just got home to an email about the posters for CUSU LGBT Awareness week. Apparently our flyers were refused at Magdalene College and accepted at Corpus and St Johns, only to be pulled out of people's pigeonholes and thrown on the floor.

This is the shocking news that in modern-day Cambridge some people still object to Queer Folk And The Like, and are not afraid to make their views known in a tediously immature sort of way.

...seriously. I mean, if a college wants to point-blank refuse the flyers then that's one thing, but pulling them out of pigeonholes and throwing them on the floor? Not only is that one of the most petty things I've ever heard of (you know, as well as being disrespectful etc), it also just seems pointless. If you object to Awareness Week drawing attention to itself then surely throwing the flyers on the floor is the wrong way to go about rectifying the situation? A small piece of laminated paper in your pigeonhole is very easy to overlook, it's considerably harder to ignore the floor suddenly being covered in rainbows.

Just sayin'.

Faaaaaaaaaailing. Faily fail fail. Fail. Et cetera.

... So, wait, who was it at Magdalene who refused to distribute the flyers? The College/Porters? 'Cause the Magdalene LBGT rep definitely organises stuff, seeing as how Newnham swapped with them last term, so he should definitely be getting the JCR president to take that up with College.

It was the head porter. There are quite a lot of LGBTU members in Magdalene itself and they're all quite enthusiastic and diligent, it would have surprised me if this had just been the reps being uncooperative.

It's puzzling, actually, because I wouldn't have expected Magdalene of all places to take that kind of stance. We had the last open meeting there, for crying out loud...

Oh, for fuck's sake. That's all I've got for this resounding level of fail. And corresponding stupid. The two are not entirely unconnected.

My icon needs to happen to them, ya know *nods*

We had a similar problem with Pagan Soc. We put posters up for various sabbats (with permission from the uni) and they kept being pulled down. It was the Christian Societies that were doing it. We found out after a stake-out.

It wouldn't much surprise me if that were the case here as well, although I don't want to point straight at them because the Christian societies so far have been quite nice and respectful. I really hope this is just individual twonks.

I am actually impressed, most of all, that you were able to laminate the flyers.

If it's any consolation, I'm at John's and I both got mine and am thinking of going to the speed-dating on Sunday :)
(as for pulling them out of pigeon-holes - are you sure it wasn't just people flicking through their post and ditching them? I know that kinda tends to happen with most fliers... if people actually were doing it on purpose though that sucks :/ I bet it was the Christian Union, they're fucking creepy.)

The guy who emailed us said that "racks" of them had been pulled down. I dunno if that's true of both Corpus and John's; I don't even know how your flyering works. It just seems like a silly thing to do.

(come to the asexuality talk next Sunday I am totally organising it)

Is Niki helping out with that? :)

She sure did! Did a great job, as well. I must dig up the article we did on the talk for her.

I now want a floor made of rainbows.

Who doesn't? :D See? That's exactly my point. Who wouldn't find a floor made of rainbows appealing?

Personally, I think a gay floor would be just fabulous to have ^_^

Pulling them out of pigeonholes sounds like so much effort too.
